Alcohol Binge Drinking: Negative and Positive Valence System Abnormalities

چکیده
Each year, 3 million deaths occur owing to alcohol misuse. Translational studies are crucial translate preclinical findings patients. Preclinical have highlighted abnormalities in specific brain systems, with these forming the basis of allostasis theory. However, few tested predictions humans using neuroimaging. We used a Research Domain Criteria approach test theory blunted positive valence system (PVS) and abnormally increased negative (NVS) responses 57 binge drinking subjects healthy control who completed an instrumental task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. As hypothesized, drinkers showed activity NVS-linked regions, such as hippocampus dorsal cingulate, PVS-linked striatum, compared subjects. Higher measures problematic use were associated more abnormal only for had been most recently drinking. These results support NVS PVS drinkers. Further similar translational neuroimaging indicated, particularly focusing on NVS.

Heavy drinking relates to positive valence ratings of alcohol cues.
A positive family history of alcohol use disorders (FH) is a robust predictor of personal alcohol abuse and dependence. Exposure to problem-drinking models is one mechanism through which family history influences alcohol-related cognitions and drinking patterns. Similarly, exposure to alcohol advertisements is associated with alcohol involvement and the relationship between affective response t...

BACKGROUND Recent studies have suggested gestational weeks 8-14 as a time window of particular importance to the intrauterine development of the male genitalia, and prenatal exposure to alcohol is under suspicion as a risk factor for cryptorchidism. We examined if prenatal exposure to alcohol, and especially binge drinking, during the suggested programming window is associated with an increased...
متن کاملComment on “binge drinking and alcohol prices”
To the editors of health economics review: There is ample evidence on the effects of prices and taxes on heavy drinking, including binge drinking [1]. Experiments on “Happy Hour” discounts in barroom settings have shown that when the price of alcohol decreases, consumption increases, and vice versa [2, 3]. A well-cited meta-analysis of 112 studies (Wagenaar et al., [4]) identified ten studies o...
متن کاملExecutive functioning and alcohol binge drinking in university students.
BACKGROUND Binge drinking (BD) is prevalent among college students. Studies on alcoholism have shown that the prefrontal cortex is vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of alcohol. The prefrontal cortex undergoes both structural and functional changes during adolescence and young adulthood. Sex differences have been observed in brain maturation and in alcohol-induced damage. The objective of the...
متن کاملDimensionality of lifetime alcohol abuse, dependence and binge drinking.
Questions relevant to DSM-V alcohol use disorders (AUD) include whether dimensional measures provide more information than categorical diagnoses, whether to combine abuse and dependence criteria, and whether to add a new diagnostic criterion, binge drinking. Binary and dimensional models of three versions of AUD criteria were investigated: (1) dependence criteria; (2) abuse and dependence crite...
